The Youth Mentoring is a tool we use to engage with young people in the communities. The youth mentor program has these core elements:
- Informal educational support outside of the school system (home-work club/study groups)
- The support of volunteers who are trained Youth Mentors
- An indirect focus on self-development of the youth members through talks, discussions and activities
- Opportunities to learn creative arts and use creative expression in various forms
- Community outreach through volunteering with various organisations
- Social interaction opportunities with peers within group and outside of the group
via outings.
Youth mentoring provides a structured and trusting relationship that brings young people together with caring individuals who offer guidance, support and encouragement. Youth mentoring programs can vary in their delivery but there are some common key elements that define youth mentoring; creating a positive, warm, informal relationship with a caring adult in a safe space, role-modelling, good training and preparation of mentors,
unconditional positive regard towards youth.

Youth Group Corner - Santa Lucija (May 2022) Every year May is synonymous with a few things like spring blooms, first swims and …yep, yearly exams. Therefore we thought to get the youth’s heads off their stressful studies during the youth group and just unwind and have fun…and the best way to spell fun is C-H-A-R-A-D-E-S. Whilst some of us kicked back on our bean bags and sofas, others put on their best miming skills to act out some movies and series. The following week , it was the opposite of kicking back and relaxing with some old-school games of prisoners. After warming up those arms and legs, focus was the only thing on everyone’s mind and excitement levels were sky high. A few grown up, familiar faces also decided to join us which always brings a smile on our faces. Competitive spirit was still running high ...

Youth Group Corner - Santa Lucija (April 2022) We kicked off April with some outdoor games! Now that the weather is warmer and we get to enjoy some more daylight, we headed down to the local playground for some kick-abouts and keepy ups. Everyone got their A-game on when it was time for a game of nutmeg football and some impromptu volleyball. April brings forth Earth Day to serve as a reminder to protect and take care of this big rock we live on. Talking about it alone is not enough however, so we decided to let our hands do the talking. The group organised a clean up around the streets of Santa Lucija and did their bit to rid off as much litter as possible and managed to collect 7 garbage bags in only a couple ...

Youth Group Corner - Santa Lucija (March 2022) This month has been all about expressing ourselves and peeling off that outer shell. With the help of drama students from UoM, we came up with different scenarios of social interaction in present times and how we behave in such situations. Interactive games and discussion circles were the means used to demonstrate and act out these cases, whether it is online or offline interactions. For this month’s activity, we decided to go down under…no, not Australia, but under the streets of Valletta. We put on our hard hats and head torches, and trudged along through passageways and shelters beneath the busy streets of Valletta. This surely gave us a new perception of our capital city! As lunchtime was approaching , we felt a bit peckish, so Maccy D’s seemed like a good option for a quick snack. To close ...

Youth Group Corner - Santa Lucija (February 2022) Despite the extremely cold weather we experienced in February, we did not let that stop us and soldiered on. Admittedly, having our own premises to meet up and not having to endure the cold outside, is a major boost to all of us who have been part of this project throughout the years. There’s just something about decorating the walls in vibrant colours, throwing in some bean bags and sofas and getting a kettle in which makes the place feel way cosier and homier. Our first activity for February was in the hands of the sports team, and what better way to keep warm than some indoor exercise 💪🏼. No equipment? No Problem! Check out how our mentors and youth got creative with whatever we had available to get the blood pumping. ...

This morning’s activity was simple. Flawless. Significant. Just perfect. We walked silently. Twenty people. No phones. No talking. 4-5 metres apart. We were asked to connect with nature, whichever way we needed to. Reflecting, thinking about specific moments in nature, observing everything or simply zoning out, eyes closed. So we walked. I was somehow transported back to specific places, moments. To being fascinated by a wild orangutan nesting on trees, in Borneo. To roaming around the mossy, damp forest in the Cameroon Highlands, in Malaysia. To resting beneath the umbrella acacia trees in Kenya, reading Wangari Maathai’s perspective about nature. To trekking to that evergreen rainforest in Khao Sok National Park, admiring the sense of wonder of an 8 year old, fearless, Italian boy. To staying in the wooden eco-lodge in San Felipe, Italy, surrounded by woods with my family. To the waterfalls in El Nicho, Cuba, enclosed by green bushland. And ...
